Science Tuition that travels to you

What I can offer

High quality science tuition covering A-level chemistry, GCSE Science and GCSE Maths

I am a qualified science teacher with several years of experience. Within these years I have developed a wide range of skills and techniques for teaching, that can aid in teaching the many needs of different students.

In-person tuition

I spent the COVID years developing my remote teaching skills and realised the benefits of in-person teaching first hand when coming back to the classroom. The most important part of tutoring is the tutor knowing the student well enough to understand the way they think - as such I offer in-person tutoring as I believe it allows me to provide a higher quality of service to the student.

Unique to each student

I primarily teach A-level chemistry as it is what I spent the most time specialising in, but I have spent years teaching GCSE science as well. The main focus I have with all my tutoring is exam technique, but how we approach exams, especially from a wellbeing perspective, is personalised for every student.

About me

Family background

I come from a science education background, with my dad being a chemistry professor at the University of York and my mum was a science teacher and tutor herself. I have spent my life surrounded by science and teaching, so it is an integral part of who I am.

Education

For A-levels I did chemistry, biology and maths and got A A* A* respectively, which enabled me to get into the University of Durham, where I studied chemistry. I went on a year abroad as part of my Masters’ year, where I studied under Prof. Todd Marder at Universitaet Wuerzburg (Germany) focusing on organometallic chemistry. I graduated with a 2:1, but with the knowledge that research wasn’t the life for me.

Teaching career

I did a PGCE at the University of East Anglia, training at Bungay High School and Dereham Neatherd High School. At the latter stages of my PGCE year COVID hit, so my first year of professional teaching at Wyke Sixth Form College was a hectic year of learning to teach and teaching others how to use IT. I spent 2 and a half years teaching there, primarily teaching A-level chemistry, which is where I focused my drive on helping students reach their highest potential and learnt specialist ways to aid in exam technique.

What a session would look like

Before the session

During the initial contact section, I will ask you to read through the contract and sign - so please read through below beforehand (see button). Any specific topics you would like to be focused on in general would be mentioned so that I can prepare resources.

During the session

In an open room (with a responsible adult within hearing distance) we would work through the content you asked for me to prepare. This involves working through questions - verbally, on mini-whiteboards or through past paper practice, whichever is most suitable. The initial focus is on the student understanding - then if they can answer exam questions on the topic, both of which are important.

After the session

After the session, if there was any work set I would expect it completed for the next session. Any topics to be covered would be also be conveyed to me 24 hours before the next session so that I can prepare.

Pricing

A Level Chemistry

An extra surcharge of £5 will be added if the students’ address is a significant drive within the East Riding or York areas - this will be discussed before the first session. Digital and card payments are acceptable, however, please note: I don’t accept cash payments.
